Aroma Pizza Café at the corner of Bissonnet and Hillcroft offers tons of variety, including vegetarian, Middle Eastern, Italian and Chinese to name a few.
They even change the menu every four or five months to keep it fresh for customers.
“We have such a strict client base, and they can’t eat anywhere else,” said Danny Barforough, who’s the owner, manager and dishwasher among many other things. “What I try to do is stay on the vegetarian side and mix it up, so they don’t get bored.
How could anyone get bored in a place where men break out into chants? Chew on this! This restaurant is completely kosher.
“We have a strong kosher base here of very religious Jews who only eat kosher food,” Barforough explained.
You don’t find one of these restaurants every day. Barforough said there are on a couple other kosher restaurants in town to choose from.
“We were pushed by the community to actually do it kosher because they were saying there’s no kosher restaurants in the community,” he said.
So, what does kosher mean exactly? Barforough had a hard time himself giving a simple answer to that question. Simply put, everything from the way food is raised to how it’s prepared is done at a different standard according to Jewish dietary laws.
“My rabbi put it simply, he says you are what you eat,” Barforough added.
Kosher kitchens get inspected every day, but not by a health inspector. “In order to keep the food kosher, we get checked every day by rabbis that come in and make sure everything has a kosher symbol and everything is fresh,” he explained. “People who only eat kosher won’t eat until they see those stamps on it and signed by certain rabbis.”
Once your food gets the seal of approval, you’re good to go. Time to nosh!
