Better Business Bureau warns of holiday scams
HOUSTON, TX – The holidays are here…the season of giving. Charitable organization, as usual, will have their hands out, asking to help the less fortunate. But do you know who’s been naughty, and who’s been nice? Which of the hundreds of charities are worthy of your hard earned cash and good will?
The Better Business Bureau of Greater Houston makes that job a little easier for you.
Leah Napoliello, Senior Director of Investigative Services for the BBB in Houston, said, “Our 20 standards for charity accountability provide a very comprehensive review of non-profits, so you can be rest assured that you’re giving to an organization is legitimate.”
The BBB has a list of organizations that meet the standards for charities, and those who’ve been less transparent about how they work.
But remember, just because someone has their hand out, doesn’t mean you have to put something in it.
Make sure the group’s cause is one that is also important to you and research where your money is going, don’t give in to a pushy sales pitch.
Dan Parsons, President of the Better Business Bureau of Houston and South Texas, said, “Reputable, legitimate organizations will still be around in two weeks to take your money, so you don’t have to rush, you don’t have to be pressured.”
It’s your money. If you want to share it with someone who may need your help, do it, but do it wisely.
