CHINA – An avalanche hit villages in mountainous areas of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday.

The avalanche, which occurred at 8:00 on Wednesday, blocked roads and damaged houses, but no casualties or injuries were reported.

In a village of Kalayaga town, a local herdsman’s house and the shelter for his livestock were buried by snow, with three livestock killed.

“I’ve lived in this house for 20 years, and I’ve never seen such heavy snow,” said the herdsman.

Local government evacuated the herdsmen and their livestock to a safe location.

The only road exiting Kazanqi village was blocked by snow reaching depths of up to 20 meters. The amount of snow on the road totaled 4,000 cubic meters, and prevented local villagers and vehicles from using it.

Villagers worked together for four hours to clear snow blocking the road.

“We cleared the snow on the road this morning. Now we are just checking the road section in case there is more snow to clear,” said Jia Sai, township head of Kalayaga, where Kazanqi village is located
