Maine same-sex marriage law goes into effect

Wedding bells are ringing all across the state of Maine this weekend.

A law allowing the unions went into effect Saturday at midnight.

Voters approved same-sex marriage in November making Maine the ninth state to legalize it.

Portland’s city hall opened at midnight so couples could take advantage of the new law right away.

Five couples in Portland instantly got hitched, while eleven more applied for a marriage licenses.

But all are couples who will no doubt have a very happy new year.
