SYRIA – We hope you had fun ringing in the new year! If you didn’t, you’re not alone. Some people on the other side of the world didn’t have a reason to celebrate. Syrians saw the same carnage on New Year’s Day that they’ve been living with for the last 21 months.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says of all the people killed in the country’s civil war 85% died in 2012. That’s 39,520 lives lost last year alone, and UN reports say as of January 2nd, 60,000 people have been killed in the country.

A rep from the UN Arab League says there’s no reason to think 2013 will be any better, saying the pace of the killings are increasing.

Syrians who’ve been able to escape the violence, and flee to Turkey are starting 2013 with one thing in mind, they’re simply grateful to be alive.
