Human trafficking a growing problem

HOUSTON – Slavery ended in the United States in the 1800’s. But what many don’t know is that there’s still a modern form of slavery going on right outside our front doors–human trafficking.

“Here in Harris County one out of every four trafficking victims is estimated to come through Harris County,” said U.S. Senator John Cornyn.

Senator Cornyn was in Houston to learn more about ‘Girl’s,’ which stands for Growing Independence Restoring Lives. The court established organization helps out young victims of human trafficking.

Senator Cornyn is dedicating his support to help bring light to the problem.

“I’m also announcing the introduction of something called the Human Trafficking Reporting Act of 2013,’ Cornyn said. ‘What it boils down to is we need to get a handle on the volume and the number of these trafficking instances.”

Officials believe this awareness will not only help victims get the help they need, but it will also help law enforcement agencies here and across the nation, put an end to this dangerous epidemic.
