VATICAN CITY – It wasn’t the same old song and dance for the new Pope’s first mass. But we’re not the first to point out that the Pope and actor Jonathan Pryce look alike.
This is the real Pope arriving in a special vehicle, not the pope mobile and this allowed him to stand up unprotected as he made his way through the crowd estimated to be around 150,000.
Along the way, the Pope stopped to kiss a crying baby, and even got out to bless a handicapped man in the crowd.
The pope made his way through saint peter’s basilica, and then back outside where he was inaugurated bishop of Rome, receiving a lamb’s wool shawl to symbolize his role as “the good shepherd” and the fisherman’s ring, representing his duty to spread the gospel.
Under blue skies and in front of waving flags, the pope delivered his first homily,
In Italian, asking the faithful to assume the roles of protectors.
After the inaugural mass, the pope greeted the heads-of-state in attendance, including vice president Joe Biden who is our country’s first catholic VP. Old Joe seemed to be on his best behavior. Thank god.
