MICHIGAN – You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks; but apparently there’s still hope for the dumb-jocks out there!

A study from the Journal of College Student Development found that the dumb-jock stereotype is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Athletes, who think they bring the brawns, but not the brains, with coaches that reinforce their belief, don’t do as well academically as student-athletes with coaches that expect an excellent performance in the classroom.

So, basically if you treat the guys and gals like big-dumb apes, that’s how they’ll act, and if they’re treated like sports-savy-scholars they’ve got potential to be A+ athletes (until they’re knocked into oblivion during the next big-game).
