PORTLAND, OR – Passengers had to spring into action aboard an Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Portland, Oregon on Monday.

23-year-old Alexander Herrera was reportedly saying bizarre things, and allegedly tried to open the plane’s emergency door.

Brave travelers held Herrera down and tied him up with shoelaces and seat belts until the plane landed.

Police say Herrera is from Arizona, and his father says he has a history of mental illness.

Herrera is now in federal custody.
