zimmermanSANFORD, FL – Alright folks, it’s day one of the George Zimmerman trial in Sanford, Florida.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Zimmerman’s been charged with 2nd degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year. The case has been anything but low-profile. So, in what we guess was an attempt to make light of a dark situation, Zimmerman’s defense attorney, Don West, started the trial off like he was at an open mic night…with a joke!

We can’t make this stuff up. West stood in front of the jury and said, “Knock-knock. Who’s there? George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman who? Good, you’re on the jury.”

Good attempt, bad taste.

After an apology, West finally got down to defending his client telling the courtroom, “George Zimmerman is not guilty of murder, he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense after being viciously attacked.”

Prosecutor John Guy wasted no time getting right to his point highlighting the teenagers last moments to an all-female jury of six. Guy told the jury, “Trayvon Martin, 21 days removed from his 16th year was faced down in wet grass laboring through his final breaths on this earth. And that defendant – at that same time – was upright, walking around preparing, preparing to tell law enforcement why it was he had just profiled, followed and murdered an unarmed teenager.”

We don’t know how all of this will pan out but we do know no matter what the verdict, there are no winners in this case.
