SLAUGHTER, LA – Grand Theft Auto IV is a popular action-adventure video game set in a world of gangs, crime and corruption.
Players steal cars, boats and helicopters, blow things up, and, yes, shoot people.
Deputies say the game may have turned into reality in a Slaughter, Louisiana, trailer park over the weekend when an 8-year-old boy took his 87-year-old grandmother’s hand gun and shot her in the back of the head, killing her.
East Feliciana Parish sheriff’s investigator say the boy lived with her in a normal, loving relationship.
Deputies don’t know why the boy intentionally shot his grandmother, and they don’t know what part, if any, the game played in it.
Take Two Interactive says blaming the game is unfair and unjustified.
In a prepared statement, the game maker said the shooting is about access to guns and not video games and to believe unproven theories sidesteps the real issues at hand.
Authorities can’t file charges against the boy because in Louisiana, a person under the age of 10 cannot be held responsible for a crime, even murder.
