HOUSTON, TX – Everyone knows that you’re supposed to drink eight, 8 ounce glasses of water a day, right?
Actually, the ‘eight-eight rule’ is considered a health myth; it just stuck with people because it was easy to remember. The idea comes from a 1945 report from Food and Nutrition Board suggesting a ‘minimal water requirement.’ Apparently most people stopped reading because the next line in the report states most of our water intake comes from: other fluids we drink and foods we eat.
So what do doctors think about the ‘eight-eight rule?’
Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, a kidney expert from the University of Pennsylvania says, “There’s no evidence that it benefits health in any real way and it really represents an urban myth. Despite the widely held notion that tea and coffee dehydrate us they actually count toward our overall water intake.”
And if you’re eating fruits and veggies — like watermelon and tomatoes — they’re about 90% water.
So the good news is your body doesn’t really need eight, 8 ounce glasses of water a day; but since water is our body’s main chemical component and makes up about 60% of our body weight do it a favor — if you feel thirsty, drink a glass of water.
