ENID, OK – It’s said that “every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.”

But what happened at New Hope United Methodist Church outside of Oklahoma City is not so angelic. The congregation’s beloved cast iron bell was stolen Thanksgiving week.

Whoever snatched the ringer showed some serious devotion. It weighs a thousand pounds!

Parishioner Dale Gillham says the relic was sitting on some wooden boards outside, waiting for its permanent home at the new church location.  He says no one ever thought it would be taken.

Although the situation is frustrating, Gillham says the congregation is still optimistic.

“We’re going to carry on, and we’ve got a lot of things happening in this church that keeps the spirit going, so we’re going to do fine,” he says.

There are no reported suspects so far.
