POMFRET, NY – Some folks love Italian food. Now there’s a politician, who worships pasta! Meet Christopher Schaeffer, a newly sworn-in council member of Pomfret, New York. But what really makes this public servant stand out, he’s also a self-professed Pastafarian. That pasta strainer on his head is a dead giveaway.

Pastafarianism, for those not familiar with the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, is a mock-religion with a sole mission of keeping intelligent design and creationism out of public schools. Their satirical view states, if God is introduced into classrooms, than their Pasta-god should be included!  A colander covering their meatballs is the traditional headdress of the Pastafarians.

The swearing-in of Schaeffer might be a sign that the town of Pomfret isn’t anti-pasti, because this Yankee Noodle isn’t only a member, he’s also a full-fledged minister.

Showing his strainer isn’t going to put a strain on his public service, Schaeffer says, “Mostly, I’m just looking forward to making sure that the town is run smoothly and we meet the needs of all of our citizens.”

Let’s hope so, for the people of Pomfret and whichever God they prey to. R’Amen!
