Governor Rick Perry’s security costs hit $2.8 million

AUSTIN, TX – Governor Rick Perry or should we call him “Pricey Perry”? We’re pretty sure tax payers in Texas will agree with us on this one.

The Texas Department of Public Safety compiles travel costs of Perry’s security detail for all of his out-of-state trips, and they found his costs have risen to $2.8 million from his 2010 re-election season through late last year. And $1.8 million of it was racked up in August 2011 through January 2012, covering his failed White House race.

The latest quarterly tab for Perry totaled $120,933; which includes Perry’s travel to Israel, England, California, Colorado, South Carolina, Louisiana, New Jersey, Mississippi and Washington, D.C.

OK, that is a lot of traveling.

To be clear, taxpayers typically don’t foot the bill for Perry’s direct travel costs; but they do pay for the Texas Department of Public Safety security detail.

Perry’s direct travel costs generally are covered by his campaign or other means.

Either way, that’s a lot of frequent flyer miles.
