Lately, it seems as though I’ve been reporting more and more on domestic violence and women being killed as a result. But often times we forget the impact this abuse is having on our children. Thanks to a Swiss nonprofit organization, Frauenzentrale Zürich, we’re reminded.

In less than a minute, one of the most powerful PSAs I’ve seen reveals the impact this has on our children.

It focuses on a young girl wanting to be like her mom. Then you see her sit at the dressing room mirror and she doesn’t just copy her mother’s ruby red lips, she also draws shadows around her right eye to share the bruises her mother bears.

The video closes with the powerful line: “Domestic violence rarely has only one victim. Don’t let it get that far.”

And it’s true.

According to the World Health Organization:

  • 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime
  • Every year, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes
  • Girls exposed to domestic violence are more likely to become victims
  • Boys exposed are three to four times more likely to become abusers

Please break the cycle. Protect yourself and your children.
