HOUSTON, TX – “Looks like a lot of competition here but I will definitely try my best.”
Stephanie Pherries is one of more than 40 women who still have hoop dream. They are all trying to score a roster spot for the Houston Inferno which is one of the franchises in the Bikini Basketball Association.
Serenity Lemond, the Inferno’s owner, says, “What is this? Are they really playing basketball? Are they going to be in bikinis? Which obviously they’re not in bikinis. While this is the Bikini Basketball Association. It’s nothing that your family couldn’t come and see.”
Kaya Pickens is trying out for the squad and says, “Just because you’re cute or you like to get your nails done or you like to wear sports bra and tights that you can’t hoop.”
While some people may laugh at the concept, these tryouts are no laughing matter.
Pherries says, “For me it’s just getting the intimidation out of the way and getting the nervousness out of the way. Once I get going, it’s just what I have to focus on.”
Shante Williams played for the Inferno last year and she says, “I think you get nervous because you see who is out here playing and you are just trying to compare yourself to other people, but really you love the game. you’re not actually scared to play the game.”
The ladies who tried out aren’t afraid, they just hope to land a final roster spot when the Inferno begins their season at the end of June.
