CZECH REPUBLIC & GERMANY – Did you know dogs line up with the Earth’s magnetic field to defecate? That’s the poop from a study in the journal Frontiers of Zoology.

A team of German and Czech researchers studied more than 70 dogs from 37 different breeds for two years. This dogged research included observing 7,000 Number Ones and Number Twos. Ha, talk about a crappy job.

The fecal findings show dogs have a butt compass and dump facing north or south, when the Earth’s magnetic fields are calm; which is about 20% of the time during the day. When the magnetic field is unstable – due to solar flares, sunspots or other issues – dogs have no “inclination to align.” Maybe this is why dogs spin around before they drop anchor.
