PROVIDENCE, RI — Authorities are trying to determine what caused a support frame to collapse during an aerial hair-hanging stunt during Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ legends show in Providence, R.I., sending eight acrobats crashing to the ground and injuring 11.

Steven Pare the Providence Public Safety Commissioner says, “They were suspended in the air by 25- to 35-feet and that came collapsing down. Hopefully, they make a full recovery, but at this point, we don’t know if that’s going to happen.”

A spokesperson for the circus says they take safety extremely seriously.

“This apparatus has been for multiple performances each week since this show launched. Each and every time that we come to a new venue, all of the equipment used by this group of performers — as well as all the other performers — is carefully inspected.”

Now investigators are looking into what caused this circus catastrophe.
