DANBURY, CT – The prom is a major high school rite of passage, and the students at Connecticut’s Danbury High School decided to put a their own spin on one of the night’s best-known traditions.

Meet Nasir Fleming, Danbury’s prom queen.

Fleming’s classmates actually wanted him to be both prom king and queen, but he chose the tiara, giving another student prom king honors.

The gay teen is not transgender, but he considers his prom queen election to be a win against transphobia.

He wrote on his YouTube page, “If I can win a title that is outside of my gender, there is no reason why a trans-person should have any problems winning titles in his or her gender.”

Next up for this boundary-pushing teen? Heading off to Manhattanville College where no doubt he’ll continue challenging prejudice with prom-queen confidence.
