NEWPORT BEACH, CA – A 15-year veteran Newport Beach lifeguard, 32-year-old Ben Carlson, drowned attempting to rescue a swimmer in distress Sunday.

Carlson jumped into a six to eight foot surf to rescue the swimmer in distress, when they were both hit by a big wave. The swimmer was rescued but Carlson was the one who needed saving.

After a three hour search Carlson’s body was found.
