HISD under federal investigation over school closures
HOUSTON, TX – Houston Independent School District (HISD) could learn a hard lesson from the federal government. The methods used to close Dodson Elementary and to re-purpose Jones High School may have violated federal procedure.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office is looking into a complaint filed against the district about its decision. Residents of the Sunnyside and South Park neighborhoods believe HISD has discriminated against black and hispanic students. The Civil Rights Office has requested HISD to provide data that supports their decision, and HISD is cooperating fully.
From the classroom to the courtroom, these residents and other community organizations are ready for a fight.
