ZURICH, SWITZERLAND- For some people putting in extra hours is all in a day’s work. A new study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology lends credence to the old adage “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
Researchers from the University of Zurich followed 121 software professionals for 5 days- quizzing them throughout the day on their productivity, or work flow. The study proves what we already know: spending time away from work helps you recover mentally and physically.
The Swiss study showed employees who felt well rested in the morning had above average work flow or were “in the zone.” Employees that worked late and didn’t have time to “detach” from their job were less productive.
So the next time your boss asks you to work late, tell him about this study but you might want to have your resume ready to go too.
