Fourteen million-year-old whale fossil found in California backyard

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA – A rare baleen whale fossil found in a rock, was recovered in Ranchos Palos Verdes, near Los Angeles.

When Gary Johnson was a teenager, playing by the creek behind his family’s home, he says he discovered the strange bones.  Johnson is now 53, and 40 years after discovering, he decided to call the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and Museum to come see if his childhood tale actually carried any weight.

“They said we can’t get this out of here, there’s no way we can get it out of here, it’s too heavy,” Johnson says.

His story had some weight to it alright. The fossil weighed more than a thousand pounds, which had to be rolled uphill by search and rescue crews.  The rare whale fossil is believed to be about 14-million years old.
