Smarter guns? Or smarter people?

Smarter guns? Or smarter people?

MUNICH, GERMANY –  You’ve heard of a smart phone, but how about a smart gun?

It’s no joke.

German gun manufacturer Armatix has created what could be the world’s first “smart” handgun – designed for safety. The iP1, as it’s called, requires a shooter to wear an electronic bracelet or wrist watch that transmits a signal to the gun. If the two are more than a few inches apart, the gun won’t fire. The idea is to render the weapon inoperable should it wind up in the hands of a bad guy. And while the idea’s catching on in Germany, it’s been met with fire here in the U.S. for one simple reason:

“Bad guys have their own guns,” says James Hillin of Full Armor Firearms, “They came in with their guns, they don’t have the intent of taking yours; they already have theirs, they’re going to do bad things so that school of thought does not work.”

Proponents of the new technology say it will protect kids who accidentally get ahold of their parents gun while others say any parent responsible enough to buy a smart gun probably wouldn’t leave it lying around anyway.

“The electronic system, it’s a good concept, it doesn’t work,” Hillin argues.

In other words, instead of smart guns, how about smart people?
