SAN DIEGO, California -- When it comes to marriage proposals, spontaneity and romance go hand in hand, but this one certainly gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "taking the plunge."

Eric Barretto was proposing to his girlfriend during a hot air balloon ride in southern California when suddenly things took an unexpected turn.

The balloon veered off course and started floating over the waves.

The pilot couldn't get it back to shore, so they threw a rope in the water and surfers were able to pull them onto the beach.

The good news is: no one was hurt.

And luckily for Barretto, she said yes.

Hopefully, their journey to marital bliss is a much smoother ride.
