CHARLESTON, South Carolina – During the last days of a campaign, you’ll find politicians talking with anyone and anything with ears.
Sometimes a candidate’s words come through loud and clear, as South Carolina’s Democratic candidate for governor Vincent Sheheen found out when making a campaign speech about the sitting governor Nikki Haley: “And we’re gonna escort whore out the door. We’re gonna escort her out the door.”
Sheheen’s folks said it was just a slip of the tongue.
And now the state’s Republican senator Lindsey Graham is spicing up the final days of the campaign with some tasty nuggets.
"I tried to help you with your tax status. I'm sorry the government's so f***ed up."
But that was just one of Graham’s comments to the Hibernian Society, an Irish-Catholic charity organization in Charleston. Another went from the profane to the inane.
"If I get to be president, white men in male only clubs are going to do great in my presidency.”
Yeah, that comment would make a lot of people wince. But, as they say, there’s more.
"Got any Presbyterians here? Got any Baptists? They're the ones who drink but don't admit it."
Graham is expected to win re-election next week. He’s also playing coy about a possible White House run.
As for his comments, he says the group expects its speakers to be earthy and to make fun of themselves and of the all-male charity.
Maybe so, but politicians who want to be taken seriously should think about taking a few lessons from Mr. T, famous for advising folks to “Cut out the jibber-jabber. Don’t be babblin’ like a fool.”
