RETTENBACH GLACIER, Austria -- Two American Olympic athletes are dead after an avalanche in Austria on Monday.

Ronnie Berlack, 20, and Bryce Astle, 19, two up-and-coming stars on the U.S. Ski Team, reportedly left the prepared slope during their training and set off the slide. The area was said to be under a level three (out of five) avalanche-warning.

Four other skiers managed to outrun the slide. It’s unclear whether Berlack and Astle had been wearing avalanche gear.
