WILMINGTON, Delaware -- Your mom probably told you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes, and we're not going to say she was wrong, but there’s a lot more to it!
“There are tons of things that are important to the eye because it's a biological workshop,” says Dr. Robert Abel, a Delaware ophthalmologist and author of "The Eye Care Revolution."
Dr. Abel says well-rounded nutrition can actually treat common vision problems. Take dry eyes, which he says is the most common condition.
“Your tear film is what you eat. If you're heavy in omega-6, you'll be dry. If you take more omega-3 and have lutein, you will have more moisture and prevent the evaporation of your tears.”
To recap, sources of omega-6 include sunflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil (processed vegetable oils, which are in many packaged foods). Omega-3 sources include salmon and other oily fishes, walnuts, flax seeds and omega-3 fortified eggs.
Dr. Abel says certain foods are particularly linked with eye health. He recommends staples like spinach, eggs, garlic, blueberries, nuts, cold water fish (sardines, cod, mackerel, tuna] and drinking lots of water.
“We are made of water, we need filtered water, and you will see it just helps clear the mind.” he says.
