CONROE, TX - What`s in a prayer? In her prayer before Montgomery County Commissioners Court Monday morning, Mary Hammer Menzel prayed for the county's road bond referendum, "But Father as we lift up this bond program to you, we just ask that you just cover it with the blood Lord and block the Satan`s users from blocking this, from helping this transportation to go forward because this county needs this so desperately."
Her prayer angered many in the audience.
"I don`t think calling opponents or proponents either Satan`s vessels or God`s vessels," according to one of the speakers.
Another speaker added,"I do believe that Jesus Christ is my lord and savior as well, and I`m not speaking for or against him, because I think that he is worried about other things besides a road bond."
And it wasn`t first time Menzel prayed for the road bond before Commissioners Court. Satan wasn`t part of her prayer on March 24. Many in Montgomery County are for the road bond, but say associating opponents with Satan is out of line.
Aaron Chambers said, "Being from the military and all, I believe everyone has the right to decide what they want, but saying someone is a tool of Satan is not very correct in my opinion."
"I think the whole motivation for her to have the floor, to give the prayer was so that she could make that derogatory, absolutely ridiculous statement," said Stephanie Fowler.
County Judge Craig Doyal defended the use of prayer during the meeting, saying, "...while I certainly regret anyone was offended by this one prayer, I do not wish to make an all-too-common knee-jerk reaction and cancel a practice that has been in place without issue for more than a decade..."
There`s no doubt about Menzel`s views, it`s those who disagree, who have to worry.
