HOUSTON, TX -- Today marks the 50th anniversary of the first time man stepped foot in space.

Astronaut Ed White completed the first American spacewalk on this date in 1965.

He piloted the Gemini Four, which orbited the earth for four days.

During that trip he popped outside the spacecraft, floating in space for about 20 minutes.

Today is also the 50th anniversary of Mission Control at NASA's Houston Space Center.
