GREENWOOD VILLAGE, CO - A family in Colorado is picking up the pieces of their home after it was blown up by a SWAT team during a 19-hour police standoff. Officials say a suspected shoplifter who was trying to get away from police barged into the home and barricaded himself inside.
Authorities say the suspect, identified as Robert Seacat, tried to run one officer over in a Walmart parking lot and even shot at cops while he tried to steal a car in the garage of the house he ran into.
Police say they tried negotiating with Seacat, but when that didn't work, they threw gas inside the house. Officers were eventually able to get the suspect out and arrest him.
Even though the entire ordeal left the family frustrated and without a home, officers say they did the right thing.
"We made the right call because we're standing here instead of standing over a casket with a flag on it or me talking to a wife or better yet, worse, we had to kill the suspect. That's not our goal," said Commander Dustin Varney of the Greenwood Village Police Department.
