LONDON -- His head may be in the stars, but Russian billionaire Yuri Milner plans to spend $100 million hunting for extra-terrestrial civilizations. He made the announcement on Monday alongside Stephen Hawking.

The duo says the "Breakthrough Listen" project will be the biggest scientific search so far, with researchers at the University of California, Berkley on the job and a decade-long commitment to survey ten times more sky than ever before; it will cover a million stars closest to earth.

An extra side project, "Breakthrough Message," also offers $1 million to anyone who create digital messages representing humanity to send into space.
