HOUSTON - After the Center for Medical Progress released a fifth video showing a Planned Parenthood executive talking about the price of aborted baby parts, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has called for Harris County DA, Devon Anderson, to launch an investigation into the organization's activities.
Anderson has promptly obliged and has opened a criminal investigation.
Planned Parenthood argues that the videos are highly edited and that it's all part of a smear campaign to deny women healthcare, But that hasn't stopped people from calling for congress to pull federal funding from the group.
Statement from Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast regarding Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson’s Investigation in Response to Edited Videos
“Planned Parenthood’s top priority is our patient’s health and safety. We comply with all federal, state and local laws and have extremely high medical standards, which are informed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and other national and international professional organizations and published literature.
“We have already provided information and are cooperating with Attorney General Paxton, the State Department of Health Services and the Senate Health and Human Services Committee in their investigations of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast and the health care we provide tens of thousands of Texan women and men. We will, of course, cooperate and provide information to Harris County District Attorney Anderson.
“These political attacks claiming that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation are simply not true. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast is not currently donating tissue for medical research. As we have stated, we last donated tissue in 2011 in partnership with the University of Texas Medical Branch for a study on the prevention of miscarriage.
“Planned Parenthood is one of the most audited and regulated health care providers in the state of Texas. We expect and welcome responsible oversight. We will work diligently to provide all the information necessary to demonstrate our compliance with the law.”
