HOUSTON, TX - Enjoy the Holidays, but the Houston Police Department also wants you to watch your back while shopping! They warn identity thieves are expected to be out in full force and are waiting for some unsuspecting victim to flash their credit or debit cards. Seems like it's not only the season for giving, it's the season for taking as well.

Lt. Chris Lohse, of the HPD Burglary and Theft Division says,"The crooks and the organized crime rings that engage in this sort of thing are constantly testing every retailer, every entity that maintains your personal and financial information. they're testing those because that information is valuable." So, how can shoppers put a dent on identity theft? Lt. Lohse says, "To prevent the damage, of credit and debit card abuse, especially when you're using the card as you are during the season, check your accounts daily."

Keeping on eye on your online accounts is crucial around this time of year, but Harris County Constable 6 Deputies also want shoppers to be wary of their surrounding, as well as what's inside their cars, this holiday season.

Constable Heliodoro Martinez, from Harris County Constable Precinct 6 says, "After you get out of your vehicle, you need to take note of what a person sees when they're actually walking by your vehicle. all your personal belongings need to be out of sight. out of sight, out of mind." That's why these officers will beef up patrols at the Gulfgate Mall, one of Houston's busiest retail centers.

So, from online accounts, to outside lots, law enforcement wants you to be safe for the holidays. Season's greetings, but don't let the Grinch steal your holiday cheer!
