HOUSTON, TX – Family, friends, past and present co-workers and city of Houston officials attended Michael Vaughns’ funeral on Saturday at Fallbrook Church.

Vaughns was a deputy assistant director in Houston’s Solid Waste Department. On December 21, 2015, Vaughns was shot and killed while at work.

“The sadness is he was doing something he loved, and he cannot do it anymore,” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said. “His life was snuffed out unnecessarily in a brutal, violent way.”

Harry Hayes, the director of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department, said workers have been given grief counseling, and the department is working with security and legal teams to figure out ways to help prevent an incident like this from happening again.
