Trump to UK: Ban me and lose a $1 billion
LONDON (CNNMoney) — Donald Trump is threatening to cancel $1 billion of investment in his two Scottish golf resorts if he’s banned from traveling to the U.K.
More than 570,000 people have signed a petition calling on the U.K. government to bar Trump from visting the country after the Republican presidential candidate called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S.
In a statement, the Trump Organization said it is planning to spend £700 million ($1.02 billion) on improvements to the golf resorts, but said “any action to restrict travel would force The Trump Organization to immediately end these and all future investments.”
In a statement, the organization said banning Trump would send “a terrible message to the world” and show that the U.K. “has no interest in attracting inward investment.”
The U.K. government can stop people entering the country if they are deemed to be “non-conducive to the public good.”
The petition will be debated by lawmakers on Jan. 18, but they have no power to exclude Trump.
Officials haven’t commented on the call for a ban. But the government has said it “recognizes the strength of feeling against the remarks and will continue to speak out against comments which have the potential to divide our communities, regardless of who makes them.”
In December, Trump lost an appeal to the country’s highest court to stop a wind farm being built near one of the courses.
