Nearly two dozen residents were affected after a 4 alarm fire swept through an apartment complex in the River Oaks area Sunday.

The massive fire broke out at 1:15am on Essex Lane and Weslayan St.

According to Houston Fire Department, the fire started on the third floor of the complex and quickly spread through the common attic.

“We woke up only because we heard someone was pounding on our door, and just yelling fire.  We weren’t going to answer until we actually heard someone yelling out fire,“ Luke Bryant said.

What began as a two alarm fire quickly escalated, leading to more than 150 firefighters on the scene.

Fire officials found a 50-year-old female unconscious from smoke inhalation. She was transported to Memorial Hermann in serious condition but has now stabilized.

Joey Evans of the Houston Fire Department said, “It’s still hot out here. This was a tremendous amount of flames. The fire was through the roof when the first crew got here.”

Red Cross is currently assisting families that were affected.
