12-year-old girl killed when bridge collapses in Sealy

SEALY, Texas -- a 12-year-old girl was killed Thursday morning when debris from a collapsed bridge fell on top of her family's vehicle in Sealy.

According to Sealy police, Carl Weige, 72, was driving on Highway 36 when he struck the Highway 90 overpass. When the struck hit the overpass, a large portion of the bridge collapsed and fell on top of a Chevy Malibu traveling north on Highway 36.

The car was occupied by a mother and her two children.

Brien Bullock, 12, was struck by the debris and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 35-year-old mother, Leah Bullock, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital for treatment.

Brien's brother, Breanbon Gardner, was riding in the back seat. The 9-year-old was not injured.

The truck involved in the crash was owned by Texas Disposal Systems. The company issued the following statement.

"We regret a TDS truck was involved in an incident impacting an overpass in Sealy, TX. We have been told there was a fatality and are saddened by the loss resulting from this incident. Our deepest sympathies go to the family members and friends. An investigation is currently underway by local authorities. TDS is cooperating fully and will also be conducting its own investigation. The truck driver, as reported to us, did not sustain major injuries. We will be in communication with the community and public as relevant information becomes available."
