A small child died Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle on the southwest side of town, according to the Houston Police Department.

Investigators said the driver of a black GMC Arcadia was headed northbound around 7:20 a.m. in the 6600 block of Tarneff Street when he failed to yield the right away and stuck a 4-year-old boy walking across De Moss Street.

Police said the driver remained at the scene until authorities arrived. The child was taken to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, officers said.

Officers determined the driver was not impaired and released him without charges, according to the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division.

Police said an investigation is underway.
