HOUSTON — Houston police are searching for the suspect who shot and killed a young mother one day before her 20th birthday.

Lakendra Childs was found dead Tuesday inside her apartment in the 5300 block of South Lake Parkway in northeast Houston.

According to Houston police, Childs’ boyfriend came home around 12:40 p.m. and found her body lying on the bedroom floor.

Neighbors told police a black, newer-model Chevrolet Camaro with tinted windows stopped outside the apartment, then fired several shots from the vehicle. Those shots went into Childs’ unit, striking her.  Childs was the mother of a 2-year-old girl.

The hashtag #RIPKendra began to trend almost immediately after her death, and social media users speculated that she was killed by a jealous rival.  Those allegations have not been confirmed.

The suspect is described as a man with a shaved head.
