You’re probably drinking the same contaminated water from the movie, Erin Brockovich

Ahh, Julia Roberts, America's sweetheart - one of her best performances is in “Erin Brockovich” where she fights a company that's poisoning the town`s water supply with a carcinogen

But there`s a strong chance you're probably drinking that same cancer causing chemical from the movie.

“Having clean water and clean air should not be a privilege for a few people.” Expressed Jeff Kaplin of New Living – Healthy Homes, a B-Corporation that hopes to educate families about the chemicals in our air and water.

An independent advocacy agency called the Environmental Working Group examined water samples taken by the Environmental Protection Agency and found out that more than 218 million Americans are being exposed to chromium-6.

Chromium-6 is a heavy metal chemical compound that is used in anti-corrosion products, dyes, cooling tanks, and plastics, but it also has been known to cause cancer.

In a 2008 study from the National Toxicology Program, scientists found that chromium-6 in drinking water caused cancer in lab rats.

“The industry has held these regulations hostage, (Industrial companies and Government organizations who ignore the issue) have done nothing but bow to their political pressure and money, and all we want is a fair hearing to get a maximum contaminant level from Chromium-6 in drinking water.” Noted Robert Bowcock, an environmental investigator and colleague with the real Erin Brockovich.

Surprisingly, the EWG`s report shows the chemical taints more than two thirds of the country's  water supply and Bowcock believes that this number is way too big to overlook.

Some scientists believe .06 parts per billion is the safest consumable limit of chromium-6,

Houston is one of the worst cities with levels between 2.5 to 5 ppb - but the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality disagrees, saying that their science proves that Texas' water is safe and fits within the EPA's standards -

In fact, there's lots of disagreement among scientists on what the limits should be- but most agree, the water could be cleaner.
