HOUSTON — Scenes like the one that unfolded in Houston Monday morning, seem to be happening more frequently these days. That's why security experts offer up this three-step plan to help you survive an active shooter scenario.
Rick Coker, from Top Gun Security and Investigations says, "It's run, hide or fight. Always first and foremost is run. If you can get away from the active shooter, that is the most important thing."
Coker knows all too well the importance of preparing yourself against gun violence. Top Gun offers training classes to those wanting to learn how to protect themselves during an active shooting.
Coker adds, "First and foremost, don't ever go for the gun itself and grab the muzzle. Because if I grab the muzzle, all he has to do is spin and pull the trigger."
And that not the only mistake someone can make during a deadly active shooting. Top Gun tells its students to put the phone away during an active shooting. Only once you get to a safe location, should you call 911.
If running is not an option, Coker gives this advise: ,
"You have to hide. Find a secure room. Then find heavy things like a copier, heavy furniture, filing cabinets and anything that you can use to barricade yourself in," he said.
But in some situations where running or hiding won't help, the last alternative is to stand your ground and fight.
Coker says, "The main thing about fighting is when it is time to fight, take it all the way. Do not stop. Once you start, you take it till the aggression stops. You take it until the shooter is down."
The main thing to remember, according to Coker, is to not give the gunman a target.
"An active shooters main goal is to kill. Once there's no more targets, and the active shooter has nobody else to shoot, 40 percent of the time they take their life," he said.
Run, Hide or Fight. It could make the difference between surviving a shooting or becoming a casualty.
