MOSUL, Iraq —  The first American soldier had died in the fight to retake Mosul from ISIS. The unidentified military member succumbed to his wounds after a roadside bomb explosion north of the city.

Meanwhile, innocent families are facing severe danger as Iraq and Kurdish forces team up to fight ISIS for control of Mosul.

The United Nations say they are "gravely worried" ISIS is using civilians as human shields during the battle.

Nearly 550 families have already been taken from their homes in nearby villages to Mosul, so they cannot escape the fighting.

Mosul is the last Iraqi city still under ISIS control. Iraqi troops have already recaptured at least 39 square miles of territory.

Reports say those suspected of disloyalty are being shot dead.

To even think this is going on in the world is enough to send chills down anyone's spine.
