HOUSTON — An underage driver was arrested Monday evening after a fatal hit-and-run in the northeast side of town, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said a 14-year-old was behind the wheel of a 2003 Jeep Liberty headed westbound in the 5000 block of Aldine Mail Route when around 8:30 p.m. the driver hit Francisco Fuentes-Escobar, who was crossing the street.

Fuentes-Escobar was not using a designated crosswalk, deputies said. Officers said the victim was trying to reach the convenience store across from the apartment complex where he lived.

It isn’t clear whether there was an adult in the car when the incident happened, deputies said.

The driver abandoned the victim without rendering aid, officers said. Fuentes-Escobar was taken to Ben Taub hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The teen returned to the location of the crash a short time later and was arrested, deputies said.

The driver is charged with failure to stop and render aid.
