HOUSTON -- It’s time for your Monday Motivation fitness tip of the day! Lift weight to lose weight!

We know you need to lift weight to add muscle, however people have a harder time grasping the concept that you need to lift weight to burn fat! The more muscle you build, the more calories your body burns each day—and this is very significant!

If you don’t have a gym membership or feel more comfortable working out at home that’s fine! You can do a lot with a set of 10, 15 or 20 lb dumbbells. Or you can grab your laundry detergent, or load a sturdy bag with some bottled water or canned food!

Here’s a great shoulder workout you can do at home with dumbbells…or laundry detergent!

  1. Jog in place while making arm circles for a couple minutes to warm up
  1. Shoulder Press – 15 reps
  1. Front Raise – 15 reps
  1. Lateral Raise – 15 reps
  1. Bent Over Lateral Raise – 15 reps
  1. Rest 1 minute and repeat circuit for a total of 3 to 5 times

Cool down and burn a little extra fat with a few minutes of jogging in place or jumping jacks.

Choose a weight depending on your strength. There’s no magic rep range- the key is to go until you REALLY feel the burn. The bigger the burn the better the benefit.

Now get to it, and make it a happy, healthy day!
