HOUSTON — Police are investigating after one student was killed and another was injured in a shooting inside the parking lot of a southwest Houston school.

The Houston Police Department received calls of a shooting around 12:30 p.m. at the Houston Can Academy. Police said two teens were sitting in a white car when a silver vehicle pulled up and the passengers started interacting with the students. The interaction escalated to an altercation and the passengers of the silver car started firing at the students, police said.

The students sped out of the school's parking lot and drove to Texas Children's Pediatrics in the 5900 block of Chimney Rock Road. One of them died at the hospital, and the other was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, investigators said.

Police said the injured student is listed in stable condition.

Houston Can Academy was immediately placed on lockdown while police secured the scene.

The school notified parents about the incident and released the following statement:

"Our focus at this time is to care for our students and make sure they are receiving the counseling resources and resources needed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, family and friends of all who are involved."

School officials said they will be providing on-campus counseling for teachers and students throughout the week.
