FREEPORT, Texas – Charges have been filed against a man who fled after his girlfriend’s 7-week-old newborn died while in his care.

Antoine Allen Gorman, 27, has been charged with three counts of abandoning or endangering a child.

Police said Gorman, who initially told people his name was Luther Antoine Jefferson, was caring for his girlfriend’s infant when the boy suddenly stopped breathing. He was babysitting the boy while the mother was at work.

The baby was transported by paramedics to an area hospital, where he later died.

Police confirm the mother’s identity is Tashiay Nelson. Police say her 3-and 4-year-old children, who were also being babysat by Gorman, have been placed in the custody of Children’s Protective Services.

A Facebook page has images of the mother and her children, in addition to a video of Gorman rocking the newborn.

Police believe Gorman is trying to flee the area and will need help from others as he does not have a vehicle. The police department made a Facebook post asking for the public to share information about the suspect.

Jefferson is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs about 160 pounds and is heavily tattooed.

Bond for each count has been set at $250,000.

Anyone with information on Gorman’s whereabouts is asked to call the Freeport Police Department at 979-239-1211.
