TRINITY, Texas — The 7-year-old daughter of a Trinity County deputy was killed, and several other children were injured,  during a school van crash Thursday morning, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Eight children were riding in a Trinity Independent School District van along W. FM 1893 when the driver stopped to pick up a child around 7:30 a.m, investigators said. While the children waited, officers said a 2008 Ford pickup truck smashed into the back of the vehicle.

Officers said a 17-year-old was driving the pickup truck with three passengers.

The officer's daughter was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Trinity, where she later died, deputies said. Five other children, the bus driver and all three pickup truck passengers were taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officers said.

Investigators said all of the children were wearing seat belts when the crash happened.

An investigation is ongoing.
