HOUSTON -- Time for your Monday Motivation Fitness Tip of the Day! Multiply your Muscles to eat MORE this Holiday Season! Whether you're trying to burn fat or build muscle, YOU NEED TO LIFT WEIGHT!
Here are two reasons why:
1. More "storage capacity" for carbs before they turn to body fat
2. Faster metabolism because muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue
You might be wondering, 'If I have more muscle can I eat an extra Christmas cookie without it turning to fat?" Quite possibly - yes! Now I've got your attention, huh?
To build muscle, some swear by fewer repetitions with heavier weight. Some say it's more reps with lighter weight, but the Mac Daddy of muscle building is training volume!
To calculate training volume, multiply the amount of weight you lift for a particular exercise by the total number of times you lift it. Increase that number in subsequent workouts by lifting heavier weights, doing more reps, or doing more sets.
Let's say this week we do 4 sets of 15 reps of bicep curls using 15 lb dumbbells. Our training volume is 4*15*15 = 900 lbs.
Next week our goal is to beat that. We could do 4 sets of 12 reps using 20 lb dumbbells. Our training volume is 4*12*20 = 960 lbs. That's a winner! Muscle building in full effect!
